Overview
In a 2 years long project (2010~2012), the Globo Design team redesigned the whole weather segment for Jornal Nacional (the most important daily news show in Brazil). Before this project, weather forecast shows in Globo had all maps created manually on Photoshop everyday by designers and meteorologists. These maps were later uploaded to a virtual set which was operated by a video graphist, so the weather presenter had no real interactions with the virtual set.
Using the technology from Weather Central software combined with ChyronHego software for virtual sets in an unprecedented R&D effort for weather broadcast, an interactive virtual set was created from scratch where the weather presenter was able to control and interact with all the artwork in three different areas (the giant globe, the translucent screen and the AR table).
Main achievements
• Reducing design work time by automating map generation
• Creating a cohesive design system for the whole Globo TV weather segment (icons, maps and graphic elements)
• Allowing a more dynamic and easier to understand weather show, allowing the presenter to interact with all the elements live in a virtual set
